In 1867 Nicolous Otto invented the internal combustion engine, in 1872 he was joined by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. Their first petrol engine was built in 1883.

In 1885 Daimler and Maybach built this experimental platform using one of their engines running on petrol/benzine. it was known as REITRAD - meaning Riding Wheel and was built to prove that an internal combustion engine could be made small and powerful enough to propel a vehicle.

The Daimler Reitrad is regarded as the first petrol powered motor cycle. The original was destroyed in a fire at the Daimler Benz factory in 1900.
